Van Williams joined Palm Beach State College in 2009 as Director of TRIO Programs, later becoming Assistant Dean of Student Services. He served as a program specialist for the Talent Search Program at his alma mater, Savannah State University, where he helped youth in the same manner as the Upward Bound program, which steered him toward higher education. Later, he served as Director of Upward Bound at both Florida State University and Florida A&M University before joining the Florida Commission on Human Rights, the state’s anti-discrimination agency.

In 2013 and 2018, Legacy Magazine named Williams one of South Florida’s Top Black Educators. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Savannah State and a master’s degree in human relations and organizational development from the University of Oklahoma. Currently, Williams is completing his doctorate in higher education administration and innovation from St. Thomas University.
